Andy Says: "I've always loved wines from Alsace, the French region bordering Germany, primarily known for aromatic whites such as Riesling and Gewürztraminer. But while Alsace might be famous for white wine, it also produces one red: Pinot Noir. And as Burgundy prices continue to climb into the wine stratosphere, I've increasingly found myself turning to Alsace for affordable, high quality French Pinot Noir. My favorite bottle lately comes from Amelie and Charles Sparr, the next generation of the Pierre Sparr family. After taking over the estate, they converted the predominantly Grand Cru vineyards to biodynamic farming and immediately began producing incredibly exciting wines. Their Pinot Noir shows brighter acidity and a bit more freshness than many Burgundian bottles with flavors of red cherry, fig, strawberry and a touch of smoke. This bottle has become a staff favorite here. I recently had the chance to meet Charles Sparr and found him to be the kind of person you hope is making your wine!"
