Andy Says: Speaking of Comebacks, how about a grape that is long overdue for one? Merlot, the most widely planted red grape in France has been out of favor in the US ever since Paul Giamatti declared: "I'm not drinking anymore (bleep) Merlot in "Sideways." The reference was to the fact that his girlfriend, who dumped him, liked Merlot. Nevertheless, the statement stuck. Most of the US quietly poured out our glasses of Merlot and pretended to prefer Pinot Noir. Since then, many of us have continued to say "No Merlot" as a guard against being called an uncultured, out of it, rube!
But here's the truth: there's nothing wrong with Merlot. In fact, if you enjoy Cabernet Sauvignon but wish it was a little softer and less tannic, you want Merlot.
We've been big fans of Ancient Peaks for years, but after recently tasting through the new vintages, this Merlot was the stand out. Rich yet balanced, with velvety textures and flavors of black cherry, mint and eucalyptus and a touch of spice from oak. A solid reminder of why Merlot deserves "further consideration" and a Comeback!
