Andy Says: "From Taburno in Compagna, the region south of Rome that's home to Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast, comes one of Italy's oldest and most noble grapes, Aglianico ( pronounce it as if the "g" was not there).
If we somehow traveled back in time to ancient Rome and politely declined whatever lead laced wine concoction they were drinking and instead demanded a bottle of the good stuff, odds are they would have rushed to the back and returned with a bottle of Aglianico from Compagna which was the Roman answer to a premium wine.
Aglianico is a rather tannic varietal often compared to Nebbiolo or Cabernet Sauvignon. Fontana Vecchia is medium bodied, offering flavors of plums and black cherries, licorice, cocoa and a smoky minerality from the volcanic soils where the grape is grown. Serve with hearty pastas, meat, rich cheeses. And anything Pompeii !!"
