Andy Says: "G.D. Vajra is one of our favorite producers in Barolo and this Nebbiolo fast became a staff choice as well. In the 1970s, a teenaged Aldo Vajra became involved in a student protest movement in Turino, so his parents sent him to "the family farm in Barolo to cool off." The punishment rather spectacularly backfired. Aldo fell in love with farming and viticulture and eventually turned the estate into one of Barolo's most respected producers.
The family uses the old Piedmontese spelling Vajra for its name, although it is still pronounced "vaira" and has long emphasized organic farming and environmentally thoughtful viticulture. Vajra is based in Vergne, one of the highest elevation vineyards in Barolo, where the cooler conditions help preserve freshness and perfume in the wines. The lighter expression of Nebbiolo shows red raspberry, wild strawberry, fragrant violets and fresh herbs with the grapes unmistakable floral character.
While I would not call it a universal pairing, that is to say, a Goldilocks Wine, it is remarkably versatile at the table. Pair it with lighter meats, mushroom or truffle dishes, pasta and rustic Northern Italian Cuisine."
