Andy Says: "To pair with the lemony, citrusy bite of sorrel, you need a white wine with enough acidity to stand its ground. Something softer or more mellow can easily taste flat beside it. Grüner Veltliner or Sauvignon Blanc would be good choices but this is another "road less traveled" option, Pinot Blanc.
Pinot Blanc is actually an albino mutation of Pinot Noir and I'll admit that I am not always excited about it. The wines can sometimes feel a little too mellow, neutral, or restrained for an acid loving fiend like me! But I totally enjoyed Kacasti.
John and I had lunch with Peter Gönc a few years ago and he was an intriguing personality with a heavy European accent. We both liked him and his wines immediately. Over the years, we have carried a number of his wines at Metro. You know those liter bottles with the flying saucers on the label? Those are Gönc.
Kacasti comes from the hills of Stajerska and, for a Pinot Blanc, it's remarkably crisp and energetic. Expect flavors of lemon, tart white peach, minerals and an herbal note. The blend brings to mind walking through a pine forest in the snow. Serve with seafood, Asian inspired dishes, lemon heavy recipes and YES, anything with sorrel!"
