Hild Elbling Trocken (DRY), Mosel Valley, Germany 2023, 11%ALC
Elbling is one of the oldest European grapes we know, likely brought to the Mosel region and planted by the Romans some 2,000 years ago.The joy of Elbling is the uncompromising vigor and energy, the raucous and super-chalky acidity. This mineral aspect comes from the limestone soils (not slate!) that you find in the upper Mosel Valley. It is here where the Elbling grape thrives and is revered not as some mystical grape but more as an honest grape that makes delicious white wine. Matthias Hild, who farms about five hectares in the sleepy town of Wincheringen, is a winemaker drumming to his own beat as he still farms some of the old, terraced parcels of Elbling.
Andy Says: "This bottle was a big customer favorite last vintage and we have been waiting for it to return. Elbling can be described as Riesling's sassy sister. Zippy and bright without being as serious as Riesling. Elbling will dance alone at a party! "
