The new vintage of a customer favorite has arrived in shop. Made entirely from the obscure Portuguese grape Avesso,* Quinta de Santa Teresa comes from the northern Vinho Verdesregion of Portugal. Nevertheless, don't expect that light, fizzy Vinho Verde style. Instead of harvesting early to preserve that classic spritz and tartness, the grapes are allowed to fully ripen producing a richer, more expressive wine. The grape juice also spends a few hours on the skins adding texture and complexity. Expect flavors of citrus, honeycomb, tangerine peel and a crisp, mineral finish with a touch of creaminess.
*Avesso: A native white grape primarily grown in Minho region of northern Portugal, specifically the Baião subregion of Vinho Verdes. Unlike lighter Vinho Verde varieties, Avesso produces medium-bodied wines featuring vibrant citrus, stone fruit, and mineral notes, alongside a refreshing acidity that makes it perfect for pairing with seafood.
Avesso translates to "contrary" or "opposite," referencing how it behaves compared to other grapes in the region. While many Vinho Verde varieties are lean and low in alcohol, Avesso can ripen well, yielding richer, more structured wines that sit around 12% to 13% ALC.
