Andy Says: "Mencia (pronounced men-thee-uh) seems to be having a moment lately. I have had multiple customers come into the shop specifically asking for Mencia which makes me think this obscure little Spanish grape may officially be the next trendy wine varietal. Typically grown in the northwestern corner of Spain, Mencia tends to produce medium-bodied reds with fresh acidity, dark fruit and a slightly herbal character. This bottle from beautiful Bierzo is a great introduction to the varietal. Made from vines nearly 100 years old, the wine shows flavors of red cherry, blackberry, coffee, and dark earth all with impressive freshness and balance."
93 Points, Luis Gutiérrez, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The young 2022 Ultreia Saint Jacques was selected from 10 vineyards, mostly cooler places because of the warmer year. The nose is harmonious and subtle, and it doesn't show any excess ripeness or heat. In fact, it is most impressive. It fermented with 100% full clusters and matured in used oak—barrels and foudres—for 14 months. The palate is medium-bodied, with a juicy texture and very fine tannins. It has a lot of fruit, but with time, it develops more complexity, with notes of fennel and aromatic herbs."
