Andy Says: with classic Genovese Pesto, I'd head less than an hour north to Gavi, in the southern part of Piemonte. Wines made from the Cortese grape shine here with lovely acidity and floral aromatics. Comparable to Pinot Grigio, but more fragrant and energetic. The bright acidity cuts through the richness of the pesto and garlic beautifully, while the wines floral and citrus notes pair naturally with the basil.
And here's a fun bit of Italian trivia: the greater region is called Gavi named after the smaller village of Gavi nestled within it. So, if your Cortese comes from the village of Gavi within the region of Gavi, it becomes Gavi di Gavi. Basically, the more Gavis, the better!
